A while ago, I mentioned that I had recently purchased some essential oils to be used in our household. I alluded to the fact that they were helping the girls to sleep better, and I completely let that thought fall away and never got around to sharing anything with you.
My mom had been begging me to purchase a Young Living starter kit for months, and after Jenn posted her guest post as well as sent me samples to try, I finally bit the bullet. At first I was a little bit wary of what these oils could do for us and how I could safely use them for our family. I still have a LOT to learn, but here are some practical ways that we have used the oils so far.
There are some oils I mention below that are specific to Young Living (a lot of brands sell combination oils that help with specific issues). The ones I mention are Peace and Calming, Stress Away, PanAway, and Joy. If needed, I could find out for you all just what goes into each combination oil!
Allergies: 20 drops each of lemon, peppermint, and lavender – topped off with a carrier oil
Allergies this year have been intense! Last week I woke up with a horrible headache, a lot of congestion, and watery/itchy eyes. I never used to suffer from seasonal allergies, but everything blooming this year just did me in. I made a roller with the above ingredients, and I stuck it in my purse. I rolled this on the back of my neck, along my nose, under my eyes (where my sinuses are.. not directly under my eyes), and on the bottom of my feet directly under my toes (it’s a point that is directly related to the sinuses). I did this as needed, probably every couple of hours, until the symptoms were gone. The pollen was only bad for a few days, but now I have this roller if I need it later on in the spring/summer!
Sleep: 10 drops each of cedarwood, lavender, and peace and calming – topped off with a carrier oil
This roller has been CRUCIAL to the girls sleep lately – and mine too. 😉 My roller actually just ran out, and I’m impatiently waiting for my order of cedarwood and peace and calming to get in. At night, we have been rolling this on the bottom of the girls’ feet, behind their ears and along the back of their neck. Combined with diffusing in their room for a few hours before bedtime, they have been sleeping much more soundly than they were before. Plus, I have been using it on myself before bed too, and it has such a calming effect!
I have been such a fan of diffusing lately! I have tried a bunch of different combinations for certain issues, and I love it.
For general viral/bacterial killing properties and to get a “fresh” feel: 2-3 drops of thieves, 2-3 drops of purification, and sometimes a few drops of lemon added to the mix. I love this combination every week or so to just get everything feeling nice and clean. With people in and out of our house every week, along with a dog and me bringing home germs from school, this has been a great combination to use.
Sleep: 1-2 drops peace and calming, 1-2 drops lavender
When I am using these in the girls’ room, I always make my mixture a little less potent. Their room is small, so I don’t want the oils to be overwhelming. This is just enough to take the edge off for them! I have also added a few drops of Stress Away on some nights as well as some thieves if anyone is sick
Mood Boosting Combination: 1-2 drops joy or 1-2 drops stress away
When the girls are feeling pretty cranky, I have put a few mixtures together and it has definitely boosted our moods!
There are some essential oils that you can apply “neat” (directly to your skin), but most oils should be diluted. With the girls, I have diluted ALL oils with the exception of lavender.
Congestion: 1 drop of peppermint in a teaspoon or so of a carrier oil
Emerson has been so congested lately due to allergies and teething, so we have been applying peppermint to the bridge of her nose, and it works like a charm!
Cough: 1 drop each of lavender, thieves, and lemon in a carrier oil
This has worked wonders for Emerson’s cough. Before bed the other night I applied this to her feet as well as her chest. Beside one long cough that woke her up about an hour after she went to sleep, she did not cough all night long.
Headaches: 1 drop of peppermint on the roof of mouth or PanAway away on my temples/behind my ears
I suffer from a lot of headaches, so I have been trying a few different things to help them. One thing that always seems to work is a drop of peppermint directly to my finger, and then I hold that finger to the roof of my mouth. This typically helps my headaches immensely!
Stress: 1 drop of Stress Away on the inside of my wrists
Believe it or not, I do get stressed and overwhelmed some days. 😉 There are some days that it is really hard to transition from work to home on days where there is a lot going on or I am feeling overwhelmed by the mess/clutter of toys/laundry to be done/crying toddlers. One drop of stress away on my wrists always helps me to feel better and instantly become calm. I seriously cannot explain it, but it works every time!
This is already gotten to be fairly long, and I have more to share! Next time I talk about oils, I may highlight how I have used them so far for cleaning purposes. As I’m moving through this journey finding out more information about oils, I’m happy to share more along the way!
